edm #4: draw your mug or cup

Over the course of my pursuit of things artsy/fartsy, I have progressed from #2 pencils, to watercolor, to a whole assortment of charcoals, graphites, and ball point pens. The latest, and longest assortment of tools has become the Pigma Micron pen. They come in a variety of nib sizes, they are durable, water-proof, and fun.

So I keep them in this mug, painted by Vinny Van Gogh. Well, he didn't actually "paint" this one, but one of his most famous, and less liked by me, paintings has been applied to the surface of this porcelain coffee cup/mug.

I have an entire series of mugs decorated with Vinny's images, some of them are the real images, and some of them are some two-bit artists renditions of what his art "looked like." I guess it's the ambience of the mug, sometimes, that makes one feel all smarmy about Vinny, coffee, and the morning news.

Anyway, this is number 4 of the series of which there are, at last count, 247 challenges. My wife asked me what I had in mind to do today, I told her, "I'm going to draw the bed (#5)." She laughed at me and told me to find something useful to do...like put away the summer furniture that still sits outside where it was in June. Do you remember June: sun, warm, birds chirping, bbq going full blast, cold beer, fresh veggies? I like June better.

Original #4 posted here.

  1. You are a good artist and are drawing the EDM challenges with flair. Enjoyed seeing the four you have done and can't wait to see the rest as you do them.

  2. Vibrant colors makes the whole drawing stands out! :) It's such a common thing to be placing all the pencils and pens into a mug. I remember using tupperware cups as my water cup for my watercolors too when I was little, and my classmates were telling me "wow..why you go use those quality stuff for such a purpose?" I simply said "it's important!" ^^

  3. Hey, I have that mug! I too have a series of mugs but rather than limit mine to Vinny, I've got a variety of artists on my mugs. My pens & pencils currently reside in a Michelangelo mug, you know that famous Sistine Chapel one with God & Adam... Anyway, nicely done. And tell your wife that drawing is a very useful task - it helps one become more observant, more focused, and in general, is good for one's health.

  4. That's quite a collection of microns. I'm thoroughly enjoying coming along with you on this journey. Thanks for keeping the list handy! And up-to-date! As for your wife, she might appreciate the sheets washed and bed made to perfection. This would enance your tactile understanding and creative process.

  5. I guess your wife talked to my husband. "Do something productive!" He says. Well, art IS productive. Only he calls it my "coloring". Beautiful mug, love your style.
